NFL rumors: Buccaneers identify Tom Brady’s potential successor at quarterback – NJ.com

Tom Brady remains undefeated against Father Time.

On Sunday, the 43-year-old quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won his seventh Super Bowl title and fifth Super Bowl MVP Award following the 31-9 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LV.

Brady, who is scheduled for offseason left knee surgery, has said he wants to play until he’s 45, if not longer.

After Sunday’s game, Brady said he will return for the 2021 season to complete the two-year, $50 million contract he signed last year. Which means the Buccaneers need to prepare for an eventual future without Brady in Tampa Bay. According to the Pewter Report, Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht believes current backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert could be Brady’s successor.

“First of all, I love his energy. I’ve really gotten close to Blaine this year just being on the sidelines. He’s a really smart guy but he is one guy, my scouts and I talk about this a lot, he’s just one guy that I love to watch throw every day in practice because he has got a cannon. He’s very accurate with his throws as well and he can just really whistle them in in tight windows. If he had been forced to play, he played in the Detroit game, but if he had been forced to play more I think that he would have really opened a lot of people’s eyes about how talented he is, especially being in the same system for a couple of years. … I’m not going to rule anything out right now.”

Gabbert was a first-round draft pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2011, going No. 10 overall. In three years with the Jaguars, he went 5-22 as a starter. Since leaving Jacksonville after the 2013 season, he’s bounced around the NFL, playing for the San Francisco 49ers, Arizona Cardinals and Tennessee Titans, before landing with the Jaguars prior to the start of the 2020 season. Gabbert played in four games last season, throwing a total of 16 passes.
