The NFL Scouting Combine isn’t going to happen this season, which means there will be even more of an emphasis on pro days leading up to the 2021 NFL Draft. It might be hard to believe, but the Clemson Tigers were the first team to have an official pro day, even if it was just for quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
It seems to be a foregone conclusion Lawrence will be headed to the Jacksonville Jaguars, but it didn’t stop plenty of teams going to see Lawrence workout. One of those teams was even the Pittsburgh Steelers. We’ll call it doing their due diligence on the prized prospect.
Check out Albert Breer’s report from the workout at Clemson:
Worth noting: Clemson WR Cornell Powell is the only other draft prospect working out today. Lawrence will also throw to ex-Jets WR Charone Peake and ex-49ers WR Chris Finke.
So no Travis Etienne, no Amari Rodgers, etc. https://t.co/94KqDAN5Zc

Now for a full list of coaches, general managers and scouts who were in attendance:
Two GMs (Joe Douglas, Terry Fontenot), two HCs (Urban Meyer, Arthur Smith) at Clemson. Mostly scouts there. 4 teams sent coaches.
• Falcons (Smith, Dave Ragone)
• Jags (Meyer, Darrell Bevell, Brian Schottenheimer)
• Panthers (Joe Brady, Matt Lombardi)
• Raiders (John Morton)— Albert Breer (@AlbertBreer) February 12, 2021
The Steelers were in attendance, but it should be noted Mike Tomlin or Kevin Colbert were not in attendance. Typically just a scout was there to take notes and take a look at one of the best quarterback prospects to come into the league in a while.
Some fans will wonder what is the use of looking at a player the Steelers have no chance of drafting, but Tomlin is big on always getting to know all prospects. He talked openly about the process when the team was able to acquire Joe Haden after he was released from the Cleveland Browns. Tomlin, despite not being able to come close to drafting Haden, knew a lot about him and had developed a rapport with him from watching him at Florida’s Pro Day.
Just some food for thought.
The next known Pro Day isn’t until March, so be sure to stay tuned to BTSC for the latest news and notes surrounding the black and gold as they prepare for the new league year, NFL Free Agency and the 2021 NFL Draft.
