Valheim is one of PC gaming’s most recent runaway successes, having sold 2 million copies in a little under two weeks since its February 2 launch. But whether or not the early access multiplayer fantasy survival game will eventually come to consoles is a question now on people’s minds. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear the game will be coming to consoles like PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or Nintendo Switch anytime soon.
According to a FAQ page on Valheim’s official website, developer Iron Gate AB mentioned that “there are no plans to release on other platforms” as of the post’s writing–which was updated last on January 18, 2021. However, the developer wrapped up its response by confirming that it wouldn’t rule out the possibility of console versions in the future.
So, if you’re hungry to play Valheim but don’t own a PC, it looks like you’ll have to wait a while. It’s also worth noting that–if it ends up coming to consoles–until the game leaves early access, it’s unlikely you’ll see Valheim come to PlayStation and Nintendo platforms. On the other hand, Valheim could end up on Xbox sooner than later, given that platform’s Game Preview program.
All that said, it’s possible that Valheim’s sudden surge in popularity may be causing Iron Gate AB to shift its development priorities, and what with the FAQ mentioned above having been updated mid-January 2021–well before its official Steam release–the statement there may not necessarily reflect the developer’s current stance around possible future platforms for the game.
Regardless, GameSpot has contacted the developer for an update on its plans. We’ll be sure to keep this post updated in the coming months with the latest Iron Gate AB has to say about Valheim making it to consoles. We recommend bookmarking this article so you’re always kept up to date.
