Shocking Drew Brees video blows up retirement speculation – New York Post

Drew Brees doesn’t look like someone about to retire from the NFL.

Brees’ trainer Todd Durkin published a video to social media Saturday that shows the Saints quarterback pushing a weighted sled through a parking lot and includes the captain: “Not sure WHY he’s so cra-cra today but something must be brewing …”

Brees was expected to retire shortly after the Saints season ended with a playoff loss to the Buccaneers on Jan. 17. But he hasn’t yet – and the longer he waits, the more it suggests he might be reconsidering his options.

The video of him fiercely working out isn’t going to quiet those suspicions. Here’s a snippet of the commentary in the video: “Drew, what are you doing? OK, he’s never done that! . . . Don’t know what he’s doing. . . Never quite been done before! . . . You needed a challenge … That’s a new record because it’s never been done before!”

Brees also was expected to retire last offseason before reversing course in March and signing a two-year contract.

“Last year, he went into the Saints coaching staff at the Pro Bowl and they cried because that was his last game. He was retiring,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter said on The Rich Eisen Show this week. “And then he took some time off and lo and behold he came back in March.”

Brees recently agreed to drop his salary in 2021 from $25 million to the league minimum to help the Saints navigate salary cap hell. That was interpreted as a sign he is retiring.

But Brees is pushing that sled like a man planning to avoid pass-rushers, not one concerned with keeping his dad bod in shape.

Few athletes get to script a championship-winning ending like John Elway, Peyton Manning and Michael Strahan, but Brees’ last game was a three-interception debacle against Tom Brady. It was not befitting of the NFL’s all-time leader in passing yardage.

“I’m not saying he is coming back. I still think he will retire,” Schefter said. “I don’t think these things are black-and-white and he’s ready to go out the door just yet, even though I ultimately think that will be the decision.”
