On an extraordinary day yesterday, former Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu and three other former or current Blaugrana senior figures were arrested by Catalan police.
This was following a judicial investigation into last year’s “Barcagate” scandal.
Also detained, according to widespread reports in the Catalan media, were Barcelona’s current CEO Oscar Grau, the club’s head of legal services Roman Gomez Ponti, as well as Bartomeu’s former chief of staff Jaume Masferrer (who also left the club last year).
Catalan police (known as the “Mossos d’Esquadra”) — with a warrant from investigating judge Alejandra Gil — arrived at the Nou Camp shortly after 9am to collect documents and other evidence relating to a possible crime of misappropriation of club funds.
