Minnesota had limited 2021 cap space heading into the early stages of free agency. But the Vikings have still been signing talent that can help them next season and ideally beyond.
It’s important to take a look at what kind of cap space the Vikings have left to work with for this season. Sure, the team is signing players like former Giants DT Dalvin Tomlinson and ex-Chargers LB Nick Vigil, but there are other needs that should be addressed.
So what can Minnesota do? Spotrac — which has Tomlinson’s, Vigil’s and Rashod Hill’s deals already baked in to its number — has the Vikings at a little more than $4.9 million in top-51 cap space.
Ben Goessling of the Star Tribune reported that Minnesota’s cap space could increase. The Vikings are expected to convert $10 million of WR Adam Thielen’s base salary into a signing bonus. That would leave the team with about $12.1 million in cap space for 2021, by Goessling’s estimate.
That would give the team enough money to sign another free agent or two, but keep in mind Minnesota still has to leave money for draft picks and undrafted free agents for later on in the offseason. Given the team’s current cap situation, I wouldn’t expect any huge splashes for the remainder of free agency, but you never know.
