NHL investigating referee after hot-mic comment about penalty call on Predators – The Athletic

What happened?

Adam Vingan, Predators beat writer: Predators forward Arvidsson was incredulous after being penalized for tripping Merrill, the Red Wings defenseman, early in the second period. The replay seemed to backed up his reaction. Predators television analyst Chris Mason went as far as calling it a dive on the part of Merrill.

The Predators killed Arvidsson’s penalty and won 2-0, but the hot-mic moment hung over the game.

What’s next?

Vingan: Make-up calls are an unspoken part of the game, but rarely are referees caught openly discussing them. The NHL is investigating the incident, and it is unclear how Peel could be disciplined if the league were to do so. To Predators coach John Hynes’ credit, he handled the situation diplomatically after the game, praising his players for not letting the call affect them.
