Why did Buck meet with Chelsea’s players?
Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck met with the squad before training on Monday morning to talk about the club’s decision to join the European Super League.
It is believed Chelsea’s players were not happy about the plans and are in a state of shock at what has transpired.
They also expressed concerns about the ramifications of the decision given governing bodies have threatened to ban any players involved from major tournaments. The European Championships is just a few months away.
There was also upset that the positive run they’ve been under Thomas Tuchel, including the win over Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday, has been completely overshadowed.
What’s been happening at Stamford Bridge?
Chelsea fans have been gathering throughout the afternoon at Stamford Bridge, clearly unhappy with their club’s participation in the Super League proposals. They have gathered in large numbers and have been chanting, letting off flares and blocking traffic ahead of tonight’s match against Brighton & Hove Albion.
Chelsea legend and technical director Petr Cech has pleaded with the protestors outside Stamford Bridge who are protesting their club’s involvement in the proposed Super League.
Cech said to the protesters: “I know, give everybody time.”
He also pleaded with the crowd to allow the team bus into the stadium.
What next?
Chelsea’s decision to walk away from the Super League dramatically increases the pressure on the 11 teams still remaining, with five of those from the Premier League.
Players participating in the Super League have already been warned by UEFA that they will be banned from World Cups and European Championships if the breakaway materialises.
Fan groups from all five remaining Premier League teams have all voiced their opposition, while UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has promised the government will consider dropping “a legislative bomb” to stop English clubs joining a breakaway Super League.
