Golden Nuggets: A Jimmy Garoppolo trade is on the horizon – Niners Nation

The big news you’ve all been waiting for happened on Wednesday: The 49ers re-signed Tom Compton. Nothing else needs to be done now, right? Happy draft day.

Curran: The Jimmy G homecoming seems almost inevitable now

When Garoppolo wasn’t hurt, he wasn’t quite what Shanahan liked either. Yeah, they got to a Super Bowl. Nearly won the thing. But Shanahan’s never been satisfied with him. Too sloppy with the ball. Too slow to decide. Too injury-prone. All those things may be true but I’d bet lodged somewhere deep in Shanahan’s subconscious is that he got sold a bill of goods.

I’ve found it absurd that the Niners were asking for a first-rounder for the very expensive, terribly brittle Garoppolo. Second-rounder? Almost as ridiculous. Despite telling their little football lies all the way — the current one being that they’d actually keep Garoppolo this year — they gotta get rid of him. They may get next to nothing and have to like it.

49ers Rumors: SF Has ‘Consensus’ on No. 3 Draft Pick Amid Mac Jones Buzz

ESPN’s Todd McShay reported Monday that San Francisco was divided on which quarterback to take: Head coach Kyle Shanahan preferred Jones, but the scouting department was pushing for Lance.

Shanahan was present at the pro-day workouts for Jones, Fields and Lance.

Per ESPN’s Dan Graziano, the 49ers were “extremely involved” in Lance’s pro day April 19, including having him work with quarterback coach John Beck at Shanahan’s request.

49ers re-sign Tom Compton

The 49ers announced Wednesday they have re-signed offensive lineman Tom Compton to a one-year deal.

He appeared in seven games with three starts after joining San Francisco as a free agent in 2020.

Compton, 31, entered the NFL as a sixth-round choice of the Washington Football Team in 2012. He spent four seasons with Washington.

Compton then spent one year in Atlanta, one year in Chicago, one year in Minnesota and one year with the Jets.

He has appeared in 106 games with 37 starts along the offensive line in his nine seasons.

Matt Maiocco: I think 49ers want to get Jimmy Garoppolo deal done in next few days

“I think they’re going to try and get something done in the next few days here,” Maiocco told NBC Sports Boston’s Tom E. Curran. “It’s a weird situation because you’ve already signaled that he has one foot out the door, you don’t want him long-term on your team, so it’s a weird dynamic where, you really expect Jimmy Garoppolo to show up to be your quarterback for the 2021 season while also grooming the young guy behind him?”

But it’s easy to understand why Shanahan might like Jones, who fits Shanahan’s preference for a passer who can win from the pocket. Jones has had success throwing outside the numbers (a 98.0 QBR on such throws is the highest of any qualified Power 5 passer over the past 10 seasons) and throwing deep (he had a perfect 100.0 QBR on throws traveling 20-plus yards in 2020), both areas the 49ers have not used much under Shanahan (26th in QBR outside the numbers and the fewest pass attempts of 20-plus yards).
