The San Francisco 49ers kicked off a three-day rookie minicamp today. While not too much should be taken from Trey Lance’s first practice of the offseason, it was good to finally see the rookie quarterback throwing while donning a gold helmet.

Today’s practice was the only one of this minicamp to which the media will have access. The remaining two sessions over the next two days are closed to reporters. While reporters probably had to use binoculars to see the new 49ers quarterback due to COVID protocols, the rookie did leave some positive impressions.

“Lance was the only quarterback in Friday’s session,” reported Cam Inman of Bay Area News Group, “and he completed his first 12 passes in 7-on-7 action, most of which came on short throws, but he did nail a 15-yard dart over the middle in early action.

Added Inman: “Lance wasn’t glaringly rusty as quarterback coach Rich Scangarello talked him through early drills.”

Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle humorously took his evaluation a step further.

Here are some other first impressions from the media, following the 49ers’ first practice — albeit not featuring the entire team — of the year.

New San Francisco 49ers running back Trey Sermon was already familiar with at least one rookie teammate — quarterback Trey Lance. The two trained together, leading to the draft, and Sermon learned quickly how hard of a worker Lance is.

“When I got that call (from the 49ers), I was excited,” Sermon shared with reporters on Friday. “I was training with this guy back in Florida, and now we’re going to be on the same team. It was definitely a good feeling.”

Sermon, Lance, and the rest of the 49ers rookies are taking part in a three-day minicamp this weekend. They were already hard at work learning Kyle Shanahan’s playbook. The rookie minicamp will be their first opportunity to show the coaching staff how much they have absorbed.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance, the No. 3 overall pick in this year’s draft, stepped onto the field in Santa Clara for the first of three practices during the team’s rookie minicamp. The Friday afternoon session is the only one that will be open to the media, and it gave reporters their first opportunity to get a look at the former North Dakota State star.

Matt Barrows of The Athletic seemed to sum things up well with the following tweet.

‘He has a chance to be special’: 49ers CEO Jed York asked Frank Gore to evaluate Trey Lance

By David Bonilla

San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York and Frank Gore remain close. The NFL running back spent his first 10 seasons with the Niners and York values his opinion. So, when San Francisco traded up to the No. 3 overall pick, York reached out to Gore to seek his opinion on Trey Lance of North Dakota State, the quarterback the 49ers would end up drafting on Thursday night.

“Just take a look and let me know what you think,” York said, per Jim Trotter NFL Media.

York didn’t hear back for weeks. That changed on Tuesday night, the day before general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan said they informed their boss, the man who signs

Trotter: 49ers traded up to evaluate Trey Lance, Justin Fields; Mac Jones was a ‘safety net’

Jim Trotter took a look inside the San Francisco 49ers’ month-long draft evaluation process that ended this week with the selection of Trey Lance of North Dakota State at No. 3 overall. Since March 26, when the Niners traded a haul of draft capital to the Miami Dolphins to move up, rampant speculation surrounded the team’s target. It made for great ratings, I suppose.

For a long time, Mac Jones of Alabama was seen as the most likely candidate to be headed to the Bay Area. Not necessarily by fans, but by the many analysts and media members with blue checkmarks by their names on Twitter.

That left fans infuriated. Jones was not a popular option. Both Lance and Justin Fields of Ohio State were favored over the Alabama quarterback.

In the end, it wasn’t
