Quarterback Kyle McCord is at Ohio State and has already gone through spring practice with the Buckeyes. But that doesn’t mean he has stopped adding high school honors to his very impressive prep resume.
McCord has been named Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Pennsylvania. McCord led Philadelphia (Pa.) St. Joseph to another state championship during his senior season. He led St. Joseph to a 62-13 win over York (Pa.) Central York to grab another PIAA 6A state championship back in late November. McCord completed 21 of 28 passes for 336 yards and four touchdowns in the title game.
In the Covid shortened season McCord and his teammates finished with a 6-0 record.
For his career the 6-foot-3 and 215-pound McCord threw for 6,887 yards and 88 touchdowns.
In February McCord was named the High School Football America/NHSCA National High School Football Player of the Year. It was the second straight year a Pennsylvania player has won this award as one season ago now Ohio State freshman wide receiver Julian Fleming was the winner. McCord was the fourth Pennsylvania player to ever win the award.
Among the many other honors McCord received during a storied prep career was to be named to the All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas. However, because of Covid the 2021 All-American Bowl was not played.
McCord led Philadelphia (Pa.) St. Joseph to two second straight PIAA 6A state championships.
McCord committed to Ohio State in April of 2020. McCord was a 5-star prospect in the 247Sports Composite. He was the country’s No. 22 overall 2021 prospect, the No. 3 pro-style quarterback, and the No. 2 prospect in Pennsylvania.
McCord had an impressive list of offers that in addition to Ohio State included Penn State, Michigan, Michigan State, Texas A&M and many others before he picked the Buckeyes.
After arriving in Columbus in January it didn’t take McCord long to get acclimated to college life and playing football for the Buckeyes. He was impressive in the Ohio State spring game on April 17. McCord completed 12 of 17 passes for 184 yards and a touchdown in his first college game action.

McCord is battling CJ Stroud and Jack Miller, two quarterbacks the Buckeyes signed in their 2020 recruiting class, for Ohio State’s starting quarterback job. At the conclusion of spring drills Ohio State head coach Ryan Day did not name a starter for the 2021 season and said the competition between the three young quarterbacks would continue into fall camp. But suffice to say McCord showed enough to the coaching staff to keep himself in contention.
