When we last checked in with Detroit Lions’ fans about their thoughts on new general manager Brad Holmes, there was a near-unanimous feeling that he had fulfilled his duties to his best ability. 97 percent of fans approved of the job he had been doing. The Lions hadn’t quite embarked on free agency yet, but that doesn’t mean Holmes hadn’t done anything.
Obviously, Holmes drew a tremendous amount of praise for orchestrating the Matthew Stafford trade, but also many praised him for avoiding using the franchise tag on Kenny Golladay and Romeo Okwara.
Since then, a lot has happened. Holmes made some tough decisions on roster cuts, creating the necessary cap space for free agency, while turning over a new era of Lions football where past players just wouldn’t be as good of a fit. Okwara and Frank Ragnow got big extensions. Holmes signed a motley crew of players to one-year deals in free agency. And, of course, Holmes had a widely praised draft, while showing off some endearing emotion in the war room.
Of course, not everyone has been fans of these moves. Detroit certainly took a risk by passing on a quarterback in the draft, and with Justin Field subsequently landing with the Chicago Bears, if that turns out to be a mistake, it would only be exacerbated by Chicago’s success. Detroit also decided to draft defensive tackles back-to-back, avoiding larger immediate needs like safety and wide receiver on Day 2.
Holmes has also shown a shocking amount of transparency which is a welcome addition after Lions fans spent the past three years outside the fortress of solitude.
So with all of that in mind, it’s time to check in on Lions fans again. Do you approve of the job Brad Holmes is doing as Lions general manager? Vote in the poll below and explain your answer in the comment sections.
