The 49ers held their second OTA practice of the week on Tuesday. This was the first practice where the media was present. The following players did not participate:
EDGE Nick Bosa
EDGE Dee Ford
EDGE Alex Barrett
C Weston Richburg
LB Nathan Gerry
S Marcell Harris
RB Jeff Wilson Jr.
S Jaquiski Tartt
WR Jalen Hurd
K Robbie Gould
According to the beat writers who were on hand, Harris, Tartt, Gerry, and Hurd were working off to the side — where they were likely rehabbing. Bosa has reportedly been rehabbing back home in Florida. The Niners star edge rusher should be with the team come training camp.
Kyle Shanahan spoke to the media after Tuesday’s practice. If you’re wondering about the QB battle, Jimmy Garoppolo took all of the reps with the 1’s, while Trey Lance took all of the reps with the 2’s.
The two quarterbacks threw a combined five passes during practice. The two also received one series during the team drill. Shanahan said there were 12 plays of 11-on-11’s and only seven reps of 7-on-7.
Shanahan said that he doesn’t ask Jimmy about his ankle because it looks so good. He was asked that question, so he had to answer it. It would be news if Jimmy’s ankle didn’t look good, as we’re at the end of May.
Plus, the team wasn’t in pads. Only helmets:
Those are extra padded helmets.
Shanahan confirmed that Bosa is rehabbing in Florida. Shanahan didn’t want to disrupt Bosa’s routine, where he’s working out with his brother Joey and a top-tier trainer. Shanahan said the 49ers have been in constant contact with Bosa.
Bosa is expected to show up sometime during OTAs, but don’t expect to see him on the field until training camp. The same goes for Hurd, per Shanahan.
Weston Richburg is retiring. We knew that, but the move won’t officially hit the transaction wire until June 1. Once Richburg retires, the 49ers won’t have to pay his base salary or any roster bonus that’s due after that. The Niners are on the hook for Richburg’s signing/option bonus prorations that may not have been taken into account against the salary cap yet.
Shanahan said not to expect to see Ford on the field until training camp. He jokingly added that the team had to keep Ford out of the team facility because he was there so often.
You thought we were getting out of a press conference without a question about Julio Jones? You thought wrong. Shanahan was asked if he had any interest in Jones. He’s not allowed to talk about a specific player, but Kyle said:
“We’re always interested in improving our team… I would never say we’re just done.”
Julio to the Niners confirmed.
