How does the dry towel work in a dryer?

Throwing a dry towel in the dryer with the wet clothes absorbs most of the moisture, making your items dry faster.

Not only does the method cut down on the drying time, the process uses less energy so you’re likely to save some money along the way.

‘Put a dry towel in the dryer with your wet stuff. I have saved 20 minutes of drying time for my towels and 15 minutes for my clothes,’ a Melbourne woman wrote in a Facebook group.

‘If I set my dryer for an hour of drying, it does an hour of airing. By putting a dry towel in the dryer with your clothes it absorbs some of the water so it makes the clothes dry quicker.’

Her post was met with nearly 3,000 ‘likes’, with hundreds confirming the drying method actually works for speeding up your dryer, especially if you’re short on time but in need of freshly-laundered clothes.

‘This definitely works. I have a cleaning business and have so many mops to get dry every day. I do this to speed up the drying process,’ a professional cleaner said.

‘Yes I’ve always done this. If I need them my clothes to dry quicker, I would put two towels in,’ another wrote.

And one woman added: ‘It works a charm! You can also put a wet face washer in with dry clothes on a warm cycle and it will create steam to get rid of creases.’

Others were amazed with the trick, with many saying their minds were ‘blown’.

‘Holy moly, I never knew this,’ one wrote, while another woman added: ‘How did I get to 43 not knowing this? My dryer went all day Friday.’

Those who tried the trick said they’ve never had any issues with their clothes being covered in ‘fluff’ after drying it along with a dry towel.

‘I use an older towel. Never had fluff on them. It absorbs the water,’ one wrote, while another said: I’ve never had bits of towel fluff on my clothes… Never had any issues. Use a dry tea towel for black clothes – works the same.’

Many shared other practical tips to do laundry, including ways to remove facial tissues from freshly-washed clothes.

‘If a tissue accidentally goes in with blacks, I put a damp towel in the dryer with the blacks and it comes off everything,’ one wrote.

Others suggested ways to get crease-free laundry without using an iron.

‘If you don’t want to iron something, put a damp face washer in your dryer with your wet shirt for 10 minutes and presto,’ one said.

Another wrote: ‘Another good dryer tip – add a couple of ice cubes to dryer and a piece of wrinkled (dry) clothing for a few minutes instead of ironing.’

And one added: ‘If I hang my towels on the line and they dry too stiff, I put them in the dryer with a wet towel to help soften them too.’
