Report: Bobby Portis Re-Signing with Bucks on 2-year, $9 million Deal – Brew Hoop

Bobby Portis etched his way into the heart of each and every Milwaukee Bucks fan with his crazy eyes, mom-slapping motivation and genuinely clutch closeout play to help lead this team to a championship. It seemed unlikely Milwaukee would have the tools to resign Portis after he opted out of this $3.8M deal, but lo and behold, Jon Horst worked some magic and Bobby will return on a 2-year, $9 million dollar contract, per Shams Charania of The Athletic.

It appears that Milwaukee was able to resign Bobby using his non-Bird rights at just 120% of last year’s salary. It’s a coup for Jon Horst and the front office as it allows them to retain the potential use of their taxpayer mid-level exception to bring in another piece. Given Portis has previously said he was offered contracts in excess of $10 million last offseason, he likely could’ve gotten at least that if not more from another team. However, the pull of folk heroism apparently was enough to keep him around town for at least another season, and enough to turn down a larger salary elsewhere:

After this year, Milwaukee would have early bird rights on Portis, meaning they would have additional flexibility to pay him more and lock him up on a longer-term deal. For now, though, Horst has to be doing backflips that the frontcourt rotation is essentially solidified for another year. Bobby. Bobby. Bobby.
