The Field of Dreams Game was more of a Field of Nightmares for New York Yankees reliever Zack Britton. He had a Thursday night to forget against the Chicago White Sox in Dyersville, Iowa.
Prior to the game getting underway, Britton got lost in the cornfield behind the stadium and initially couldn’t find his way back to the stadium.
According to Ken Rosenthal, Britton and other Yankees relievers Chad Green and Lucas Luetge went to check out the house where the 1989 film was shot. As they made their way back towards the field, the three Yankees got lost. Britton even went on his own to try to find his way out of the corn maze.
Britton did make it out of the corn maze with plenty of time to spare before the game began.
As if getting lost in the corn maze behind the field wasn’t enough, Britton then proceeded to blow the game for the Yankees when he entered in the bottom of the ninth inning.
The Yankees erased a three-run deficit in the ninth inning and took an 8-7 lead into the final frame, thanks to a two-run home run from Giancarlo Stanton. Then in the bottom half of the inning, White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson launched a two-run walk-off home run off of Britton into the very cornfield the pitcher got lost in hours earlier.
Was this hell for Britton? No, it was Iowa.
