One of the top-rated players in the Class of 2022 just made North Carolina and coach Mack Brown very happy. Five-star defensive lineman Travis Shaw committed to the Tar Heels live on CBS Sports HQ on Saturday during an emotional ceremony. Shaw, the No. 4 player in the country according to the 247Sports Composite, chose the in-state favorite over Georgia, Clemson and North Carolina A&T.
“It’s just a blessing, coming from my home state,” Shaw said of his decision. “This recruiting process was definitely overwhelming, but I’m glad it’s over.”
The deciding factor for the Grimsley High School product was the support he felt on his official visit to Chapel Hill on June 25. “it was all love there,” Shaw said. “It was all genuine.”
In addition to being a five-star prospect ranked in the top five of the Class of 2022, Shaw grades out as the nation’s No. 2 defensive lineman and No. 1 player from the state of North Carolina in the 247Sports Composite.
247Sports national recruiting expert Chris Singletary wrote earlier this month that Shaw is “athletic enough to play all over the defensive line with great production” and “projects as an all-conference player with the chance of being a first round pick in the NFL Draft.”
“Shaw is has excellent awareness and is able to read and react on plays that are away from him, chasing them down from the backside,” Singletary noted. “He has good flexibility in his hips and he can drop his weight and turn the corner when rushing the passer. He has to continue to work on playing with a low pad level and utilizing his hands when he gets off blocks, along with adding pass rusher moves to his game.”
