The explosive display offensively that the Michigan Wolverines put on the field this weekend will be what draws the most attention of the fanbase, but a former member of the team put up an insane performance on Saturday.
Former Michigan quarterback Ren Hefley, who spent two seasons with the program as a walk-on in 2019-20, threw an FCS record 10 touchdowns in his first start for FCS Presbyterian in an 84-43 win over NAIA St. Andrews.
Hefley completed 38 of 50 passes for 538 yards and the 10 scores, the final of which came early In the fourth quarter. He had touchdown passes of 1, 62, 79, 36, 9, 25, 5, 1, 49, and 6 yards, respectively, in Saturday’s game.
Hefley’s performance helped head coach Kevin Kelly to his first victory in his first collegiate game, Kelly made the jump from the high school ranks after leading Pulaski Academy in Little Rock, Arkansas to nine state titles in 18 years on the job.
Hefley, an Arkansas native, was ranked as a two-star prospect coming out of high school in Arkansas and joined Michigan prior to the 2019 season. He never saw game action for Michigan, but was a multiple-time recipient of Scout Team Player of the Week honors and was an Academic All-Big Ten performer during the 2020 season.
Michigan’s quarterback storyline has been well-plowed to this point, but this has nothing to do with that. It’s simply a cool story in what has been a pretty crazy weekend for college football. Nobody in Ann Arbor is going to shout to the heavens about the “one that got away,” but it is neat to see one of their own making history.
