ATHENS – Georgia QB Carson Beck is expected to make the first start of his career on Saturday against UAB.
That’s according to Beck’s high school coach in a report from the Athens Banner-Herald’s Marc Weiszer on Friday.
The move comes after a week of Beck sharing or taking most of the team’s snaps with the No. 1 unit. Georgia coach Kirby Smart has not formally announced the move, but the 6th-year head coach said earlier this week that Beck was the team’s No. 2 quarterback.
UGA starter JT Daniels is said by insiders to be suffering from an upper-body injury that is limiting his ability to throw without further injuring himself. Insiders describe that injury as “minor”, but it appears that the Bulldogs are not willing to take a risk in playing the California native.
It is unclear how long Daniels will be out of the Bulldogs’ lineup. No. 2 Georgia plays UAB this weekend before hosting South Carolina on September 18th in its first conference game of the year. A trip to Vanderbilt comes a week later. Last week No. 5 Georgia beat No. 3 Clemson 10-3 in Charlotte.
Beck was considered a four-star prospect in high school where he won a state title in Florida’s largest classification in 2018. He redshirted last season, but played in the fourth quarter of the Bulldogs’ blowout win at Missouri. Georgia also has former starter Stetson Bennett on the roster. Bennett has spent much of his practice time filling in at the No. 2 spot with Beck over the last few weeks, Kirby said this week.
