Florida State is at rock bottom.
After only winning three games last season, FSU is now 0-3. It has lost in a heartbreaker to Notre Dame. It lost on a hail mary to Jacksonville State, its first loss ever to an FCS team. And now it has been blown out on the road against Wake Forest.
In many ways the Seminoles looked like they’ve regressed this season, both on offense and defense. After coming back 18 points down against the Irish, the ’Noles couldn’t muster any kind of comeback against the Demon Deacons.
The story of the game was the wildly inconsistent offense and a defense that can’t stop the pass. Big play touchdowns and a crippling six turnovers on offense. One for six on third downs.
Perhaps most surprising of all is the performance by the quarterbacks. While Jordan Travis missed reads in both the pass and run game, he had nearly all of the positive plays for Florida State. Still, Travis couldn’t finish the game due to a shoulder injury that kept him out of the second half. McKenzie Milton, meanwhile, was almost exclusively a disaster, at one point turning the ball over on three straight plays and finished with four total turnovers with 119 yards and no touchdowns.
Wake Forest’s offensive scheme where they ride the read-option mesh for geological epochs nullified players like star edge rusher Jermaine Johnson. But Florida State could not do anything to slow down Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman.
But there are also lots of questions for this coaching staff, especially regarding playcalling and personnel usage. Where do you go from here?
In the end Florida State was not competitive.
