A mother and her 2-year-old son died on Saturday after falling from the upper deck at Petco Park before the San Diego Padres’ game against the Atlanta Braves, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
The woman, 40, and her son were reportedly eating at a concession area on the third level concourse at the stadium on Saturday afternoon. Witnesses told the Union-Tribune that they suddenly saw the pair falling from the third level down to the street below.
The fall was about six stories. The two, who were not identified, were pronounced dead at the scene just minutes before the first pitch was thrown.
The child’s father was at the stadium, too, though it’s unclear if he was with them when they fell. The incident is still being investigated.
“Our hearts obviously go out to the family, but also to the people who here could be potentially traumatized who saw this,” San Diego Police homicide Lt. Andra Brown told the Union-Tribune. “It’s a horrible, horrible thing. That’s why we’re giving it a very serious look.”
