Teen apprehended after shooting outside Carmel-Ben Davis football game – WTHR

A 16-year-old boy was taken into custody after the shooting, which wounded another teenager.

INDIANAPOLIS — A 16-year-old was taken into custody following a shooting that halted a high school football game at Ben Davis High School Friday night.

According to IMPD, officers from their department were called to assist Wayne Township Schools police on a report of a person shot around 9:25 p.m. Friday. Officers arrived to find a 16-year-old male that had been shot in the arm.

His condition is stable, police said.

The teenage male who is suspected in the shooting fled the scene, but was chased down by school police and apprehended near Ben Davis High School. He has been transported to IMPD offices downtown for further questioning.

Police said the shooting happened just outside the stadium, where Ben Davis was facing Carmel in their homecoming football game. 

According to a tweet from Carmel Athletics immediately after the shooting, the teams were sent to the locker room and those inside the stadium were reportedly safe.

A short time later, the account tweeted that the game had been called and would not resume. 

Another tweet, this one from WBDG-FM, said officers apprehended a suspect in the shooting, which occurred outside the football stadium. That tweet cited Wayne Township Schools police.

According to a witness, a fight was broken up inside the stadium shortly before the shooting. The witness, who was watching the game from outside the stadium, said one person in the fight was apprehended, the other ran through the stands. 

Moments later, the witness said about eight shots could be heard. Players from Carmel reportedly laid down on the field to try to protect themselves, while Ben Davis’s players huddled for cover as fans tried to run away.

IMPD is assisting Wayne Township Schools police, since the incident occurred on school property.
