The Fighters Pass Vol. 2’s last challenger is scheduled to be revealed on October 5 during the Final Mr. Sakurai Presents for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate broadcast. This event will be held at 7:00 a.m. PDT / 10:00 a.m. EDT, and is slated to have a 40 minute runtime.
In a recent Tweet, Masahiro Sakurai, the Director for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, had some interesting words to share regarding the upcoming event. Sakurai doesn’t go into specific details about anything, but his words might serve as a bit of a clue of what to expect.
“The last DLC fighter for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be announced on October 5th ET/PT/CEST,” wrote Sakurai. “I hope you all join me live for one last celebration of gaming. Make sure to mark the date in your calendars!”

Whenever Masahiro Sakurai spoke about the conclusion of the Fighters Pass Vol. 2, he was quite adamant that Challenger Pack 11 would contain Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s very last character. In fact, he’s said this about six times before.
The finality of this event has been further emphasized by the title of the broadcast. This is said to be the “Final Mr. Sakurai Presents for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” broadcast, after all.
During the recent Nintendo Direct, Yoshiaki Koizumi really nailed down the point how this upcoming presentation is intended to be the last hurrah for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
“Mr. Sakurai, the game’s director, will reveal this fighter in the final Mr. Sakurai Presents video on October 5. It’s been about 3 years since the game was released. This will be the last presentation about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.” – Yoshiaki Koizumi
“We have some news about the last fighter for the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate game,” said Koizumi. “Mr. Sakurai, the game’s director, will reveal this fighter in the final Mr. Sakurai Presents video on October 5. It’s been about 3 years since the game was released. This will be the last presentation about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.”
For anyone that might still be stubbornly holding onto hope that there could be more fighters beyond the Fighters Pass Vol. 2, Sakurai’s recent statement on how this broadcast will be the “last celebration of gaming” for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate sounds pretty conclusive.
Historically, it’s always felt like each entry in the Super Smash Bros. series didn’t really end off in a bang. As such, it’s common to hear that fans should be tempering their expectations for this final Super Smash Bros. Ultimate unveiling.
However, it really feels like Sakurai is really building hype up with his message on how this will be “one last celebration of gaming.” This seems to hint that whoever will be revealed on October 5 is some sort of important gaming icon.
As pointed out by PushDustIn on Twitter, Sakurai once mentioned that Smash is intended to be a “celebration of gaming” shortly before the reveal that Minecraft’s Steve would be playable in Smash. Could this upcoming challenger be as important to gaming’s history as Steve?
Of course, it’s worth mentioning that Sakurai also emphasized this for the Fighters Pass Vol. 2 during the Byleth reveal (which is mostly seen in the banner of this story).
The last time that I remember Sakurai mentioning the “celebration of gaming” was before Steve’s reveal.https://t.co/lEBUVZYEMZ
He also mentioned it when talking about DLC Fighter Pack 2 shortly after it was announced:https://t.co/W5R5cxHMvz

In any event, this comment alone seems to further disconfirm characters like Goku or Iron Man — although Masahiro Sakurai has previously disconfirmed characters like these already.
Furthermore, it seems like this mysterious newcomer won’t just be some obscure character. For better or worse, Waluigi’s chances have been greatly diminished as his impact on gaming has been minute.
What unveiling awaits us on October 5? We’ll just have to wait and see how things play out.
