San Francisco Giants were ready to troll Dodgers, Cardinals minutes after clinching NL West – SF Gate

The San Francisco Giants are NL West champions for the first time in nine years after capping off a 107-win season (a team record!) with an 11-4 victory against the San Diego Padres on Sunday.

The game was never really in doubt, which gave the folks who are in charge of the scoreboard at Oracle Park ample time to come up with a quality trolling effort.

See, the NL Wild Card matchup was set basically the moment the Giants jumped way ahead of the Padres, guaranteeing they’d advance to the NLDS. San Francisco’s victory prevented a potential tie atop the NL West between the Giants and Dodgers, a scenario that would’ve jump-started a one-game tiebreaker for the division, with the loser dropping to the Wild Card round to play the St. Louis Cardinals.

So rather than continue displaying the Dodgers’ score in their regular season finale against the Milwaukee Brewers — a game that did technically matter to Giants fans until it very much didn’t — the scoreboard operators went ahead and displayed a very different, yet-to-be-decided contest. They changed the scoreboard to show “STL” and “LA.”

This is also just a fact! The Dodgers and Cardinals will play each other Wednesday to decide who gets to play the Giants in the NLDS. I have a feeling, however, the Oracle Park scoreboard operators will not be faithfully updating the Dodgers-Cardinals tally on Wednesday night.
