Texas lands commitment from four-star wide receiver Brenen Thompson – 247Sports

Spearman (Texas) four-star wide receiver Brenen Thompson announced his commitment to Texas live on CBS Sports HQ Wednesday night, choosing the Longhorns over Texas A&M and Oklahoma State in a ceremony in his high school gymnasium.

Thompson becomes commit No. 22 for Steve Sarkisian‘s first recruiting class at Texas, vaulting the Longhorns into the No. 2 spot in the 247Sports team rankings for the class of 2022. The Texas Panhandle speedster also becomes the second wide receiver commit for Texas in the class, joining fellow four-star Armani Winfield from Lewisville (Texas).

After a busy summer of official and unofficial visits, Thompson settled on a final three of Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas A&M ahead of the season and planned visits to all three spots for the season. He made the trip to Stillwater for the Pokes’ opening game against Missouri State and took his official visit to Texas for the Longhorns’ win over Rice in September. The Texas staff made a huge impression on Thompson and his family, so much so that he moved his commitment up to Wednesday and pledged to the Longhorns before making his return trip to Texas A&M.

On his official visit, a meeting with former Texas All-American Jordan Shipley at halftime of the Rice game was something that stood out about Texas’ pitch. The two discussed Shipley’s transition as a small-town kid to being in a large city like Austin and still being able to do the outdoors activities that he likes doing. Thompson relates, as you will rarely find him in the house playing video games, watching Netflix, or even watching football on the weekends. He is typically out shooting cans or fishing, and Shipley was able to give Thompson a vision of what that could look like while living in Austin.

Along with the life aspect, Thompson sees a fit in the Texas offense as a deep ball threat with his lightning speed. A second-place finisher in the 100-meter race (10.38) at the state track meet in May and a gold medalist in the 200-meter race (21.27), Thompson is easily one of the fastest football recruits in the nation. Given Steve Sarkisian’s philosophy of prioritizing recruits with speed, the marriage between Thompson and Texas proves to be a perfect match.

In 2020, Thompson helped lead his Spearman team to the third round of the 3A-Division II playoffs after being named a 3A all-state selection as an all-purpose player by the Texas Sports Writers Association. He was also named first-team all-district at both wide receiver and cornerback.

At 5-foot-10, 165 pounds, Thompson is the No. 84 ranked recruit in the country for the class of 2022, according to 247Sports Composite, making him the highest-ranked commit in the Texas class. He is the No. 11 ranked wide receiver in the country and the No. 14 recruit from the state of Texas.
