EAST LANSING, MI – Videos and photos showing fans burning couches amid a police presence are circulating on social media after Michigan State claimed victory during Saturday’s game vs. the University of Michigan. The MSU Spartans won 37 -33 over the Michigan Wolverines during the Saturday, Oct. 30 home football game.
A police presence was reported in the area of Cedar Village in East Lansing after the game on Saturday as fans celebrated the Spartan’s victory. Police began to clear the crowd shortly after a vehicle was flipped over, according to an MLive photographer.
The Barstool Sports twitter page posted multiple videos showing the scene, including a video of fans tipping over a car and another video of couch getting set on fire while an individual sat on it, ultimately catching fire himself briefly. Other twitter users showed couches burning in various areas of East Lansing.
Officials from the East Lansing Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. It was unclear if anyone was arrested or injured in any incidents following the game.
However, the department posted on social media the following list of ‘need-to-know’ ordinances back on Oct. 27 in light of the then-upcoming game and Halloween, which included a reminder to not set fires: Setting fires in the community is dangerous and places an unnecessary burden on the City’s critical emergency services. Anyone caught setting a fire could face arson charges and/or other charges. If community members see someone starting a fire, they should call 911.
