FSU is projected to have three quarterbacks on its roster in 2022: Jordan Travis, AJ Duffy, and Tate Rodemaker.
Adding one more body to the room feels essential to FSU’s on-field success in this coming season. Either a clear-cut upgrade – which might be difficult, but if you can get it, that obviously changes the complexion of the program – or someone to provide quality depth as an insurance policy in case Travis gets hurt and Duffy isn’t quite ready to lead the offense as a rookie.
With that in mind, this is a position FSU is likely to explore throughout the offseason.
Here are some names currently on the market:
** Spencer Rattler, Oklahoma. A former five-star recruit and preseason Heisman favorite, Rattler had a stellar redshirt freshman campaign as he started 11 games, throwing for 3,031 yards and 28 touchdowns with seven interceptions. He was the AP first-team and All-Big 12 quarterback.
Talent isn’t an issue for the strong-armed signal caller. However, he was benched for standout freshman Caleb Williams this past season, and rumors circulated that Rattler wasn’t a great locker room presence.
From a talent perspective, Rattler is an NFL-caliber QB. But is the juice worth the squeeze? FSU is in Norman, (Okla.) currently, recruiting Oklahoma players who are entering the transfer portal after the departure of Lincoln Riley. Rattler doesn’t appear to be a high priority for FSU and we do not believe FSU will actively pursue him at this time.
** Jack Plummer, Purdue. A former starter who completed 318 of 491 passes (64.7%) for 3,403 yards and 26 touchdowns to 10 interceptions in 20 games from 2018-21. Plummer is yet another QB from Arizona (Gilbert). He was the No. 22 pro-style quarterback in the Class of 2018. He entered the transfer portal on Tuesday, and is someone who would make sense as the steady-hand veteran to push Travis without instantly shaking up the QB room. Of the quarterbacks on the market currently, he’s the one who makes the most sense.
Other Names to Note: QB Cornelious Brown IV, Georgia State (threw for 2,278 yards and 17 TDs to 10 INTs as a RS Fr. in 2020, was benched in 2021…followed by several FSU staff members on Twitter, but that could be from HS recruitment. Perhaps he could be a serviceable backup.). … QB Peter Costelli (a former low-end four-star DT QB from California who transferred in his first season at Utah. There are some ties/familiarity with the signal caller, but he’s clearly looking for immediate playing time after Utah found its QB of the future in Cameron Rising. Would FSU be a good fit?) …I imagine folks will ask about UCF QB Dillion Gabriel and Ohio State QB Jack Miller (another Arizona prospect). I do not believe either is an option being explored right now.
