Should he stay or should he go?
That’s what the New York Giants have to decide about quarterback Daniel Jones, who’s underwhelmed in three seasons since being the No. 6 pick overall in the 2019 NFL Draft.
At this point, it’s all but certain that the Jones decision won’t be made by the person who drafted him, general manager Dave Gettleman, who’s a dead man walking after another season of futility for the Giants.
With a pair of top-10 picks in the 2022 NFL Draft, the Giants have the necessary capital to select or trade for a new franchise quarterback.
But ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Thursday on “Get Up” that the Giants remain all-in on Jones.
“I think they still believe in Daniel Jones as their quarterback, and as we talked about with the Eagles, what are their options? Who can they get that would be better than Daniel Jones at this point in time? Right now, the plan is to bring Daniel Jones back. And again, who’s making that decision for the Giants at the general manager spot, that’s question that I think everybody’s wondering about moving forward here because it looks like they’re going to have a new GM after this season. So that becomes a question there: Who’s making that decision? But Daniel Jones has done enough to be brought back for next season. I think that’s their thinking right now, that he will be the guy, though that doesn’t preclude them from looking around to seeing what the other options are.”
However ESPN Monday Night Football analyst Louis Riddick, who interviewed with the Giants before they hired Gettleman, believes it could be time for New York to go in another direction.
“Well I think at the very least you have to consider all options at the position, both in terms of replacing and/or at the very least bringing in competition. I don’t think you can go into his fourth year and have him be the unchallenged starter. … If you watch him from week to week, this is a guy who can look like one of the up and coming superstars or a guy who makes just the kind of errors that make you pull your hair out and go, ‘What are you thinking? Why are you putting the ball in harm’s way like this? Why are you putting your team in jeopardy?’”
