San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is dealing with a thumb injury. Some believe we may have seen the last of the veteran passer in red and gold. Rookie Trey Lance could start on Sunday against the Houston Texans. Garoppolo may have already lost his starting job once he can return, especially if Lance performs at a high level in his place.

NFL Network’s and FOX Sports’ Peter Schrager believes there might be no turning back if Lance gets his shot to finish out the season for the playoff-hopeful Niners.

“Yeah, it might be time to rip that Band-Aid off, and not just for this week, but for the remainder of the run,” Schrager told FS1’s Colin Cowherd. “Jimmy Garoppolo did not play well on Thursday, injury or not. And the truth of the matter is Trey Lance has been playing well in practice over the last month.

“He’s healthy, and there was a wonder around the league, ‘Are we going to see him? Jimmy’s playing great. Let’s stick with Jimmy.’ Jimmy did not play great against the Titans.”

Garoppolo was 26-of-35 passing for 322 yards and a touchdown against the Tennessee Titans last Thursday night but tossed two costly interceptions in the 20-17 loss. On top of that, he is dealing with the newly revealed injury. Head coach Kyle Shanahan called it a thumb sprain, but other reports state Garoppolo suffered a UCL tear and a chipped bone in his thumb, which might severely impact his ability to grip the football.

The situation could lead to Lance making his second NFL start and taking part in his first in-game action since Week 5.

“I’ll just say this: Trey Lance might be the biggest X-factor in the NFC moving forward because what if he does have [an understanding of the] whole playbook that Kyle Shanahan has been working on with him?” Schrager said. “What if he does have an element to his game that we haven’t seen yet. There’s no tape on him. There’s no film on him. And we know what we’re getting with Jimmy.

“This might be an interesting start against Houston. They play the Rams in Week 18. They might make the playoffs. I wouldn’t be shocked if it’s Trey Lance’s job from here on out.”

The 49ers host the Texans on Sunday and then close out the regular season on the road against the Los Angeles Rams. If they win out, they are guaranteed a playoff berth.

Peter Schrager identifies the 49ers’ Achilles heel heading into the playoffs

The San Francisco 49ers are playing some pretty good football right now and have situated themselves nicely as the sixth seed in the NFC playoff picture. However, the winning has to continue, and that must begin with Thursday night’s road game against the Tennessee Titans.

The 49ers could be an intriguing team heading into the playoffs. No one is really picking them to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl, but no one in the NFC is looking forward to facing them either. That’s because they are heading into the postseason hot, winning five of their last six and six of their previous eight.

Peter Schrager of Good Morning Football knows that head coach Kyle Shanahan’s squad isn’t perfect. Specifically, one position on defense could prove to be the team’s

Jimmy Garoppolo’s handling of Trey Lance situation has earned him a new level of respect among 49ers teammates

It’s clear that quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has always had a healthy amount of respect in the San Francisco 49ers’ locker room, but what he’s dealt with this season has increased that respect to a new level.

Garoppolo was put into a challenging situation this season after the 49ers decided to trade up in the 2021 NFL Draft and select their quarterback of the future in Trey Lance. Garoppolo had been the starter for the 49ers since they acquired him in a trade from the New England Patriots in 2017, but injury issues over that time helped, in part, to push the 49ers to add Lance, even though Garoppolo was the quarterback during the team’s Super Bowl run in 2019 and remains under contract through next season.

49ers say Trey Lance has been dicing them up at practice, but Jimmy Garoppolo is undoubtedly the team leader

Trey Lance remains the quarterback of the future for the San Francisco 49ers, but Sunday’s 31-13 win over the Atlanta Falcons showed why Jimmy Garoppolo is still running the show.

Garoppolo produced an efficient performance in the win over the Falcons, throwing for 235 yards on 18-of-23 passing and one touchdown. On top of that, Garoppolo was clearly fired up heading into the game and set a tone for the other players, at least according to fullback Kyle Juszczyk.

“I know today, there was something different about him,” Juszczyk said. “He had this aura about him. Even at breakfast, George [tight end George Kittle] and I looked at each other (and said) ‘Jimmy’s ready to go today.’ I love to see it from him. It’s contagious too, because when we see our head guy like

Breer: Jimmy Garoppolo starting for 49ers in 2022 would be a red flag on Trey Lance’s development

The San Francisco 49ers have always said they were willing to be patient in rookie quarterback Trey Lance’s development, despite trading a haul of future draft capital to move up to the No. 3 overall pick to select him. In year one, the Niners have shown that patience, holding onto Jimmy Garoppolo as the starter and allowing Lance to sit behind the veteran quarterback and learn.

How long does that patience last, though? NBC Sports’ Peter King recently said that the 49ers have not yet decided how to handle their quarterback situation heading into 2022. If true, that would mean that holding onto Garoppolo as the starter remains an option.

Both Garoppolo and head
