Guardians

After a lacking initial reveal and understandable comparisons to Marvel’s Avengers, many had written Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy off long before its release. But thankfully, this comic book adaptation stands strong as a rock solid single-player action title. Stuffed with humorous dialogue and some surprisingly great character moments, it’s a space-faring adventure that’ll have you cheering for Star-Lord and his ragtag alien crew all the way to the credits. Definitely one of 2021’s feelgood hits.

Resi

It’s crazy to think back on the sheer popularity of Lady Dimitrescu, isn’t it? The towering villain captured the imagination of the internet following the announcement of Resident Evil Village, and that surge of interest allowed Capcom’s latest horror title to flourish. Fortunately, the game itself is a blast — a blend of classic survival horror and batsh*t insane action. Capcom’s glorious run of form continues, and we simply can’t wait to see what it does with Resi going forward.

Ghost of Tsushima

Ghost of Tsushima was voted our community Game of the Year for 2020, so it’s no real surprise to see it return in its enhanced and expanded form. Director’s Cut includes the excellent Iki Island expansion, which is arguably the highest quality act of Jin’s entire journey. Of course, it also helps that the base game plays better than ever on PS5 thanks to great use of haptic feedback, and 60 frames-per-second at 4K performance. One of our favourite ever open world games — and we’re pretty sure that most of you will agree.

2. Returnal – 1494 votes (9%)

Returnal

Housemarque’s been making bangers for years, but with Returnal, the Finnish developer really stepped things up to the next level. Many questioned whether the studio had what it takes to stand side by side with Sony’s heavy hitters, and while you can still see Returnal’s indie roots below the surface — in its gameplay structure and minimalistic approach to storytelling — there’s no doubt that this intense shooter is one of the PS5’s best.

Insomniac has quickly become one of Sony’s most important studios — arguably the most important — and Ratchet & Clank: RIft Apart is yet another example of why the developer is currently at the top of its game. Not just an incredibly impressive technical showcase for the PS5, Rift Apart is also a damn good action platformer. It’s got just about everything you could want from a R&C title: the creative weaponry, the quirky characters, the brilliant set pieces — and it’s fun for players of all ages and skill levels. A well deserved community Game of the Year.
