Warriors guard Klay Thompson could make his return to the court on Sunday after more than two years away from the action because of injuries. For Warriors fans, the anticipation is high.
So are the ticket prices.
On Tuesday evening, sets of two tickets for Sunday’s matchup against the Cleveland Cavaliers at Chase Center were available on Ticketmaster for between $276 and a startling $14,308 per ticket, depending on the arena section.
For comparison, a set of two tickets for the Warriors’ home game against the Utah Jazz on Jan. 23 was listed on Ticketmaster for between $160 and $10,430 per ticket.
For Sunday, Ticketmaster prices for a single ticket started at $271 and got as high as $2,504. For a group of four, ticket prices ranged from $315 to $7,952 per ticket.
Ticketmaster is an official ticket vendor for the Warriors.
Prices for Sunday’s game appeared to have increased since earlier in the day Tuesday, when one Warriors fan tweeted that he had bought tickets for the “cheapest seats for Sunday” for $225 each, including fees.
Another basketball fan eager to see Thompson make his return was discouraged by the sky-high prices.
“*Googles Chase Center ticket prices*,” he tweeted in meme format. “*Cries in poor*.”
Warriors tickets are the most expensive in the NBA, according to an analysis by the sports news website Sportsbuzz. The average ticket price this season is $589, up 29% since two years ago, according to Sportsbuzz.
Thompson, a five-time NBA All-Star, has been sidelined with injuries since Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals. He tore his ACL in that game and then tore his Achilles tendon in November 2020 as he was preparing for a return to the court.
The Warriors and Cavaliers faced off in four consecutive NBA Finals between 2015 and 2018, with the Warriors coming out on top in three of those four series.
In recent weeks, Thompson has been traveling and scrimmaging with his teammates. Warriors officials have said that he will make his return at home, meaning that if he is not ready to play by Sunday, he will most likely return on Jan. 18 against the Detroit Pistons.
