Everything at stake when Alabama plays Georgia for 2021 national title – AL.com

Clearly, a lot is at stake when Alabama faces Georgia at 7 p.m. CT Monday for the national championship. The culmination of the 2021 season 10 days into 2022 could define or rewrite legacies as two SEC teams meet for the sport’s top prize for the third time in 10 years.

Before we go further, let’s hit the reset button to put everything in perspective as to the history on the line in Lucas Oil Field on Monday night.

Alabama program records/streaks

— Alabama national titles: Alabama claims 18 total championships while the NCAA record book counts the 12 Associated Press championships. Notre Dame has the second most with eight, none since 1988.

Alabama win streak vs. Georgia: The Crimson Tide won its last eight games against Georgia. The last loss came in Saban’s first season, a 26-23 final in Tuscaloosa when Kirby Smart was Alabama’s defensive backs coach. The Tide has a 42-25-4 record against Georgia dating back to 1895. That includes a 1,270-908 scoring edge.

— Alabama win streak vs. SEC East: The Tide has won the last 34 games its played against teams from the other division. Its last loss came in the 2010 season when South Carolina pulled a 35-21 upset in Columbia.

— Dome wins: Alabama hasn’t lost an indoor game since the 2014 season when it lost to Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl. The Tide is 24-2 in dome games since 2009 with the only other loss coming to Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl a year earlier.

Nick Saban records

Nick Saban’s national titles: He has seven currently, the most of all time after breaking the tie with Bear Bryant last year. A win Monday would give him eight total, seven at Alabama.

Nick Saban vs. assistants: His perfect mark ended in October with the loss to Jimbo Fisher and Texas A&M. His record currently stands at 25-1 against assistants who formerly worked for him.

Nick Saban vs. Alabama assistants: Fisher was an assistant at LSU so Saban’s still unbeaten against those who worked under him at Alabama. He’s 12-0 in those games after beating Smart and Georgia in the SEC title game.

Individual records

— Bryce Young already holds Alabama single-season records for passing attempts (490), completions (331), passing yards (4,503) and touchdown passes (43).

— Jameson Williams is 349 receiving yards behind DeVonta Smith’s single-season record set last year. At 1,507 yards, he’s 220 behind Amari Cooper’s second-place mark of 1,727 set in 2014 but he’d need a top-5 single-game performance to beat that.

— Williams is on pace to claim the school record for average yards per catch. He enters with 20.1 yards per reception, ahead of the 19.3 Jerry Jeudy tallied in 2018.

— Williams needs one more touchdown catch to tie Cooper (16) for second on the single-game list. Smith broke that record last year with 23.

— Another 100-yard game would give Williams eight, breaking a tie for second in the Alabama book but still behind Smith’s nine from last year.

— Will Anderson is 4.5 tackles for loss behind Derrick Thomas’ single-season record of 39.0.

— On the sack list, Anderson is 0.5 behind Thomas’ 1987 season that ranks second behind his record 27.0 from 1988. The sophomore has 17.5 sacks in 14 games.

— Anderson is No. 4 on Alabama’s career sack list with 24.5. He’s 0.5 behind Kindal Moorehead for No. 3 and 4.0 behind Jonathan Allen at No. 2.
