The Kansas City Chiefs have activated safety Tyrann Mathieu from concussion protocol ahead of Sunday’s AFC championship game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Mathieu suffered the injury in last week’s win over the Buffalo Bills. He was cleared to play against the Bengals in the hours leading up to kickoff.
Mathieu started 16 regular-season games for Kansas City, recording 76 tackles, a sack, three interceptions and three fumble recoveries. Kansas City struggled to contain big against big plays in his absence against the Bills as Josh Allen threw for 329 yards with four touchdowns. Gabriel Davis ran free through Kansas City’s secondary while tallying eight catches for 201 yards and all four of Allen’s touchdowns.
His return is key for the Chiefs as they look to limit a Bengals passing attack featuring Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.
