Don’t count Tim Kawakami of The Athletic among those who are wildly predicting Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers suiting up for the San Francisco 49ers in 2022. Instead, the longtime writer firmly believes that Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch will stick with the plan set forth when they traded a haul of draft picks to move up and select quarterback Trey Lance with the No. 3 overall pick.
The move started a countdown on Jimmy Garoppolo‘s time in the Bay Area. The veteran quarterback was to remain the starter for, at most, one more season, but Lance was the future. Now, San Francisco is expected to part ways with Garoppolo, officially declaring that the Lance era begins now.
The only real question is when Garoppolo will be shipped out of Santa Clara and to whom. A few items are stalling other quarterback moves. What will happen with Rodgers in Green Bay? What about Russell Wilson in Seattle? Team decision-makers are still keeping an eye on the Deshaun Watson situation in Houston.
Kawakami believes both the 49ers and Garoppolo are interested in finalizing the details of a move relatively quickly and know that a bidding war is unlikely. However, Kawakami also believes San Francisco wants to do right by Garoppolo, something his replacement, Lance, even acknowledged.
“If [Garoppolo] does [leave], he deserves to go to a great situation, so I think they’re going to make sure they do get that done if Jimmy does leave,” Lance told Rich Eisen earlier this month.
A trade cannot become official until the start of the new league year on March 16. However, nothing is stopping two teams from agreeing to the terms of a trade. Kawakami believes the 49ers could have a deal in place within the next six days, pointing back to the trade that sent Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs, allowing San Francisco to move forward with Colin Kaepernick.
“I think something very similar will happen with the 49ers and Garoppolo,” Kawakami wrote, “and it could happen pretty soon, though it can’t be official until mid-March.”
Kawakami believes a trade will be agreed to and reported by the end of this month. He also predicts a landing spot and the compensation for Garoppolo—to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a fourth-round pick this year and a conditional pick that could become a second-rounder next year.
Kawakami noted, “While I can guess that several teams will be interested in acquiring Garoppolo, I don’t think any of them will plan for him as the long-term franchise QB. Which will limit his trade value.”
Report it.

The Athletic predicts extension figures for Deebo Samuel, Nick Bosa, other 49ers offseason moves
The San Francisco 49ers shipping quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to the Pittsburgh Steelers by the end of the month wasn’t the only offseason prediction made by The Athletic’s Tim Kawakami. The longtime scribe also projected several other moves, including contract extensions for two of the team’s biggest stars.
This offseason, the 49ers can begin negotiating contract extensions for defensive end Nick Bosa and wide receiver Deebo Samuel. Samuel, a second-round pick in 2019, is entering his fourth NFL season. Bosa, San Francisco’s first-round pick that same year, has a fifth-year team option, but Kawakami doesn’t see it coming to that. The
Garafolo: 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo’s no-trade clause ends on March 16 but talks to begin soon
Everything points to the San Francisco 49ers trading quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason. When and to whom remains the question. The team is expected to transition to Trey Lance in 2022, offloading this past season’s starter and his $26.95 million salary-cap hit.
On Sunday, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo discussed the plan for the 49ers quarterback and why March 16 is an somewhat-important date.
“49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, emotional after the playoff loss here (at SoFi Stadium) a couple of weeks ago, knowing it’s likely Trey Lance, and not him as the team’s starting quarterback in 2022,” Garafolo said on-air. “Now, Garoppolo has a no-trade clause for the next 31 days. It expires at the start of the league year on March 16. But I’m told that’s not a
How desperate could Washington become in potential trade for 49ers’ Jimmy Garoppolo?
What happens if Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson remain with their respective teams—the Green Bay Packers and the Seattle Seahawks? A down year for draft-eligible quarterbacks could force quarterback-needy teams to overpay in the trade market.
That would bode well for the San Francisco 49ers, who are expected to part ways with veteran Jimmy Garoppolo, a quarterback with a career record of 33-14 as a starter. Could a team like the Washington Commanders become desperate enough for an upgrade to acquire the 49ers starter from the past four-and-a-half seasons?
The Commanders may seek a new face for the offense, and Garoppolo might be an excellent fit depending on what Washington does on offense next
Trotter: 49ers hope to trade Jimmy Garoppolo into a winning situation, considered starting Trey Lance in Week 18
What will the trade market be like for Jimmy Garoppolo? Will the San Francisco 49ers have to settle for a mid-round pick after trading away a second-round pick for the quarterback in 2017? Or will quarterback-needy teams get desperate and overspend for Garoppolo thanks to an unimpressive incoming rookie quarterback class?
Jim Trotter of NFL Network says the 49ers haven’t made a final decision about Garoppolo’s future. However, most expect the team to officially transition from Garoppolo to last year’s No. 3 overall pick, Trey Lance.
“One thing I’ve been told is why this relationship worked this year, which really could have been
