At the buzzer: Indiana 74, Maryland 64 – Inside the Hall

Quick thoughts on a 74-64 win against Maryland:

How it happened: Foul trouble plagued Indiana in the first half of Thursday’s game against Maryland. The Hoosiers had Xavier Johnson for only seven minutes and Trayce Jackson-Davis for 10 due to each player picking up two fouls. Despite being without two of their three most important players, Indiana led 28-18 at the 4:49 mark on an Anthony Leal 3-pointer from the left corner. But the Hoosiers stalled out offensively, Maryland went on a 9-0 run got within one at 28-27. A late Miller Kopp shot pushed the lead to three by intermission.

The Terps tied the game at 30 on a Hakim Hart 3-pointer early in the second half, but Indiana answered with an 8-0 run. That forced a Maryland timeout with 16:33 to play. By the under 16-media timeout, Indiana led 42-32. Maryland cut the lead to five at 42-37 on a Fatts Russell 3-pointer and Julian Reese dunk. But Indiana answered with five straight to push the lead back to 10 at 47-37 with 13:07 to play. At one point, Indiana and Maryland combined to make 17 straight shots. Maryland closed to within three at 53-50 with 9:53 to play on a Reese putback. Xavier Johnson answered with a 3-pointer to make it a 56-50 lead and then got a steal and an assist to Miller Kopp to make it 58-50 with 8:27 to go.

By the 5:53 mark, Indiana led 64-52 on a Trayce Jackson-Davis layup. It was Indiana’s 13th straight make from the field. The Hoosiers’ lead ballooned to 13 at 69-56 with 2:41 to play on a Johnson 3-pointer and then to 15 on a Jackson-Davis dunk with 1:56 to play. The win, which snapped Indiana’s five-game losing streak, improved Indiana to 17-10 overall and 8-9 in the Big Ten.

Standout performers: Xavier Johnson scored a season-high 24 points on 7-of-7 shooting from the field and 7-of-8 from the free throw line to go along with six assists. Race Thompson also had an outstanding night and finished with 19 points and nine rebounds in 38 minutes.

Statistic that stands out: Indiana scored more than a point per possession for the first time since a 74-57 win against Penn State on Jan. 26. The Hoosiers scored 1.13 points per trip and shot 59.6 percent from the field.
