After entering the week squarely on the wrong side of the NCAA Tournament bubble, according to CBS Sports Bracketology Expert Jerry Palm, Virginia Tech will appear in the ACC Tournament title game on Saturday with a chance to clinch an automatic bid to the Big Dance. The No. 7 seed Hokies upset No. 3 seed North Carolina 72-59 in Friday night’s semifinals to clinch their first-ever appearance in the ACC title game.
The Hokies will face No. 1 seed Duke, which outlasted No. 4 seed Miami 80-76 in the first semifinal game on Friday. The Blue Devils will be seeking their 16th ACC Tournament title under 42nd-year coach Mike Krzyzewski, who is retiring after this season.
By defeating the Tar Heels, Virginia Tech robbed Duke of a chance at securing revenge on its arch rival. UNC beat Duke 94-81 last Saturday in Coach K’s final home game, creating the possibility that the Tobacco Road rivals may get to settle their season series in the league tournament this week. Instead, it will be a Virginia Tech team looking to cement its NCAA Tournament status taking on a Duke team trying to send its legendary coach out with an ACC Tournament title to accompany his regular season crown.
