Giants observations: Logan Webb dominates Padres in 2-1 victory – NBC Sports

SAN FRANCISCO — A day after fireworks, arguments between coaches and conversations about “unwritten rules,” the Giants and San Diego Padres played a game that was a much better fit for this rivalry. The final score was 2-1.

The Giants came out on top, riding Logan Webb’s dominance to a series win and a 4-2 homestand. Webb threw a career-high eight innings, edging past his previous best, a 7 2/3-innings gem in Game 1 of the NLDS last October.

After Tuesday’s weirdness, the teams just went back to baseball, and for the Giants, that meant a very familiar feeling. They have now won 15 consecutive regular-season games when Webb is the starting pitcher.

The only real drama in this one came in the ninth, when Camilo Doval walked Eric Hosmer and then drilled Jurickson Profar to load the bases. Doval struck out pinch-hitter Matt Beaty, ending a game that lasted just two hours and 11 minutes.

Same Old Webb

The Padres got a run in the first inning but that was it against Webb, who became the first MLB pitcher this season to get through eight innings. Webb did it on just 96 pitches, but he’s still on a pitch count so he didn’t get a chance to chase what would have been his first complete game.

Webb got better as he went, finishing with just four hits allowed and no walks. He struck out seven, continuing a theme for Giants starters this season. In two starts on this homestand, Webb allowed just two earned in 14 innings, striking out 10 and issuing just one walk.

The Giants won both games, and Webb extended his streak to 24 consecutive starts at Oracle Park without taking a loss. Webb set the franchise record on Opening Day.

Top Prospect Party

Heliot Ramos and Bart are close friends, and when Ramos arrived over the weekend he found his locker right next to Bart’s. On Wednesday, they were in a big league lineup together for the first time, and Gabe Kapler wasn’t bashful. Ramos hit in the cleanup spot in his second career start and Bart batted sixth as the designated hitter.

Ramos was instrumental in the Giants taking the lead. After a dominant first inning from Sean Manaea, Ramos led off the second with a walk. Mauricio Dubon singled and Williams doubled to put the Giants on top.

Ramos grounded out to short in his next at-bat and then hit into a double play with two on in the sixth. Bart struck out in all three of his plate appearances.

Luke Was Their Padre

Williams made his second start at third base and made an immediate impact. His liner to left drove in a pair and gave Webb all the support he would need, and Williams showed off his defensive instincts in helping Webb limit the damage in the first.

With a runner on third and one out, Luke Voit hit a grounder right to Williams. Kapler plays first base during batting practice every day and said one thing that stands out about Williams is how accurate his throws are, and that was clear on a perfect strike to the plate.

Jake Cronenworth had no shot, and the Padres wouldn’t score again.
