Dynasty Warriors film trailer has huge battles, magic powers, and Lu Bu – Polygon

Dynasty Warriors is a video game franchise about famous figures from Chinese history who use massive weapons and mystical powers to kill huge numbers of nameless enemy troops. If you think that sounds like a bad premise for an entire feature-length film, the new trailer for the new Chinese-produced Dynasty Warriors movie proves you completely wrong.

This trailer is all about the action as it jumps from one magical move to the next. At one point, Guan Yu, played by former K-pop idol Geng Han, crashes onto a battlefield and sets everyone on fire with his giant crescent-blade staff. Next the trailer gives us a short montage of other characters from the games showing off their own army-destroying powers.

Of course there’s also a few shots devoted to Lu Bu (Louis Koo), one of Dynasty Warriors’ most famous, and most powerful, characters. In his brief time on screen, Lu Bu takes on three enemy generals at once and decimates an enemy army with lightning that shoots out of his halberd. What’s more Dynasty Warriors than that?

The video game series has always been about ridiculous and over-the-top action, and this first trailer matches that energy perfectly. Other than action, the movie’s story will be (loosely) based off the Chinese historical text, Records of the Three Kingdoms, which gives a history of the late Eastern Han dynasty and the subsequent conflicts between the Cao Wei, Shu Han, and Eastern Wu Chinese states after the Han dynasty’s fall.

The Dynasty Warriors movie is set for release in China on April 30, but there’s no confirmed date for a U.S. release just yet.
